I sent this to my Dad when I was out visting my Mom in Boston in October 2004.

There's a lot of backstory. I'll try and make it brief. I went through a period when I didn't speak to my Dad for about 8 years and my Mom for about 9 years. I patched things up with him first. It took a little longer with her but eventually we got back in touch.

I wasn't ready to handle going back to Maine to see them both so I arranged to spend a weekend in Boston and just play tourist with my Mom.

That's where I picked up this postcard. Even though I didn't actually go to Fenway on that visit, I figured it'd bring good luck. And hey, it did! They won the Series and broke the curse. And I was so happy about it and happy for them. But most of all, I was happy for my Dad. I was happy he had lived to see it for himself.

He was a loyal Red Sox fan for as long as he was my father and for decades before. Though we never actually went to a baseball game together, we spent some of our nicest moments together in front of the T.V., bonding over baseball.

I went out in the morning to pick up the newspaper and as I was walking back up the driveby, I glanced at the front page.

Obviously, May 19th, his funeral, I was too preoccupied with family things to worry about baseball.

But there it was... loud and proud on the front page of the Bangor Daily News, a color photo of Jon Lester celebrating his no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals.

He threw it on the day of Dad's funeral.

Coincidence? Maybe not.

I flashed back on the summer of 2007. Whenever I visited Maine, the best part of spending time with my father were the quiet moments - just watching baseball together. Our language. And I remembered distinctly how we had watched Lester's comeback game in July 2007. The commentators were talking about his incredible story, how he overcame his battle with cancer to return to the sport. We talked about him a bit - this was before Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer - but he held Lester in high regard. When it comes to my father, that's really saying something - he was always such a backseat GM. :)

So, even though I missed the no-hitter game itself, it was a very special moment there in the driveway to know he had achieved it. A nice tribute that probably only a father and son can really understand.

Rumor has it a Coco to KC for Ramon Ramirez trade is a done deal. I'll miss Coco and wish him well in an everyday player role again...
